The Witches of Darkmoon are a family of half-orcs who make their home within the Darkmoon Forest. For generations these witches have propagated their line by breeding with the tribal orcs who come to them looking for divinations or with the human loggers with whom they share the forest. The daughters of these unions are trained in the ways of witchcraft and grow up to join the ranks of the Witches of Darkmoon. The male offspring don’t fair nearly so well. Many are killed outright while a rare few find their way out to the world.
The orc Strego was certainly not the only half orc to be welcomed into a logging camp by the humans who lived there. Their powerful builds make them naturals with an axe after all. Strego was however one of the few with mystical potential. It was a testament to his force of personality that he was able to keep his powers in check and hidden despite years of abuse before he was set free to make his own way out of the woods.
It was in those woods that he was found by Karsak, another half-orc. Karsak and his human wife Trina took the boy of not quite ten winters in and taught him the ways of the axe. It was about a year before the boy felt safe enough to start using his magic and only in secret. Mending a broken tool while no one was looking or flavoring the community stew pot. The happiest day of his life was when Karsak took him aside and thanked him for the help with restoring his favorite axe, granting it to the young Strego as a gift and a sign of acceptance.
After that Strego worked openly with the other men of the village, often going out on harvesting missions, using his magic to create light so that the loggers could work into the night. As time went on his powers only increased and soon he was regularly expending his power to grow himself and other loggers, making the harvesting all the easier.
The saddest day in Strego’s life was when Karsak died, succumbing to the ravages of a mysterious plague that was sweeping the forest. But as Karsak had taught him, you do not succumb. You take the tools you have and you fight back the darkness.
